Opening
The Lost Clone series by Jordan Rivet was one of the pleasant surprised that I began reading during the SPSFC competition with book one Replacement. As I've mentioned in past reviews, even though that book didn't win the competition it made a big enough impression on me to continue reading the series after the fact. That alone should tell you something about this story.
On top of that, this series certainly has a Young Adult feel to it which is a genre I don't typically enjoy reading. From time to time I do find myself wrapped up in a book or two from that category and this series has kept me interested so far. My most recently read in this series was the third installment titled Insider which is very fitting to the major plot of this stage of the story.
Pacing
The pacing continues to be on the faster side of things, yet still very smooth. I have continued to take advantage through the first three books now in experiencing the audio versions narrated by Talon David. Talon has continued to provide some excellent performances to make each character feel very unique. Talon was a new to me narrator for book one so I took advantage of a bit of immersion reading both visual and audibly which helps me get used to performances. I've not needed to do that since and felt very comfortable here in book three Insider.
World Building
The worldbuilding can always be difficult for me to breakdown in series as I progress. Some continue to expand on the world in geographical or history adding further depth to the story. Others I tend to focus on how the story is being told. As in how descriptive does the author get? Does it make me loose myself and feel like I'm there in the moment? I think Insider does all of this. The world doesn't expand too much geographically this time around but we do get a few new areas being explored and they are great.
The level of detail has felt just right for me. Some authors can go overboard in describing the environment in scenes where I can feel like I'm starting to drift off and lose attention. As with Goldilocks trying the porridge, the level of descriptions has been just right for me in this series up to this point.
Character Development
The character development continues for several characters. Obviously we see Jane's growth and how her perspectives change a bit as she learns more and more about her batchmates and sponsor. There are many great relationships for good or ill sprinkled throughout Insider. I love a book that can catch me off guard with some twists and turns and this one didn't disappoint in achieving that. In a world where clones are possible, I suppose it's safe to say, it's going to be difficult on who to trust or what to expect. I'm here for these reveals so far!
Closing
In the end this series continues to hold my attention. I'm not sure what the intended length is to be of the series. I know there is a fourth book already available which I've added to my Kindle and may or may not pick up the Audible version depending on when I get to Exile in 2025. It's on my tentative TBR though.
As far as recommendations, I would certainly say if you like Young Adult, Science Fiction, Mysteries, this should be right up your alley!
