Opening Thoughts
The Bound Worlds by Megan E. O’Keefe has remained on my radar since I finished book two in the series back in January. This author has become one of my go-to reads for exciting Sci-Fi adventures. Book three has not changed that.
Pacing
The pacing worked well for me. I didn’t feel the story seemed rushed. There is an added aspect with some time hopping to keep straight but Megan does a fairly good job with indicating what part of the timeline things are taking place in. As long as you are paying attention this shouldn’t be difficult. I’d also like to mention that I continued this series with the audiobook narrated by Ciaran Saward who did an excellent job bring the story to life and again helping keep us on track with timelines.
World Building
The world building continued to be grand in this series. Book three did a good job brining so many things together from all the way back in book one. I couldn’t ask for much more when wrapping up a trilogy. The only thing that continues to confuse me a bit without giving away much in the way of spoilers (hopefully), is keeping up with the prints and reprints. I constantly had the feeling of not knowing whether the characters in the scene were legitimate or not. The last was just how exactly the time traveling was happening. This was touched on a very small amount but it still left me wondering the logistics of it. This is probably my own issue with overthinking things and not just enjoying them for the story they are though.
Character Development
Lastly, we have the character development. As creative as the author’s worlds seem to be, her characters might be my favorite part to most of her works that I’ve read. We have quite a few repeat characters returning in the third book and even though we see plenty of growth in the final book of the trilogy, looking at the entire series shows us even more of that growth with many of them. There are plenty of straight forward characters but we also have a handful of complex characters that continue to keep us on our toes. Niara’s entire story arc is a sight to witness with so many twists and turns along the way. That isn’t to take anything away from some of the stronger supporting characters such as Tarquin and even Fletcher (who I grew to despise). There is plenty of suspense and redemption in The Bound Worlds so hang on tight!
Roundup & Recommendation
Overall I think I may have enjoyed The Protectorate series slightly more but The Devoured Worlds is a very close second place if I were ranking my favorites from O’Keefe.
That brings me to my recommendation for this. Obviously if you have already began reading this series and enjoyed it, just keep on going. If you perhaps read book one and were on the fence, I’d also recommend continuing as I felt the series continues well and finishes very strongly. If you have not read any of the Devoured Worlds, but perhaps read her Protectorate series and enjoyed it, give this a go as well. Finally, if you haven’t read any of Megan E. O’Keefe’s science fiction books and love a creative futuristic world with strong complex characters, pick this series or the other mentioned up.
